My house was built by my husband – by ML

This house was built by my husband, and the architect was Stefan Buzas who lived near the Library in Ham and who was a good friend.  He came originally from Hungary and he studied in this country and in America and he learnt that the Americans were building open plan houses, and therefore this house is also an open plan house.  My husband was working in the City of London and he lived at Hardwicke House where the Booths were living.  He rented two rooms at the Booths’ house and he met the architect through being in Ham.  That’s why when this plot came up for sale he bought it but he didn’t build on it for several years.  I think it cost us £12,000 to build.  Yes, we couldn’t give the house a number because people had objected to it.  It was so different to all the other houses and people really didn’t like it.

He [Stefan Buzas] designed his own house and the house next to the Library, Nos.57 and 59 Ham Street.  No.57 was demolished and there is now a Huf house in its place and I expect no. 59 will have the same treatment.
