No, he was a fireman.  He was a window cleaner and he was cycling past the Richmond Fire Station, which was just off the Richmond Road roundabout, and he saw this sign that they were recruiting firemen so he went in and they said “well you’re a bit small but we can see that you’re very good with ladders and we’ll see”, and they took him on and after the war finished and they wanted to get rid of him the Fire Station Chief said “no we need him, he’s very adept at climbing”, so he stayed on until he retired.  It was the AFS and then it became the NFS
