Links between Ham Boys Club, Ham Football Club and Ham Boxing Club – by MF

Oh, I think I probably enjoyed it up to a point, but I don’t recall being there for a long term doing it, no.  I think, mostly, when I was about 12, you had Ham Boys Club, which we used to go to… that’s where Ham Football Club ended up as a base.  I think they started up more as a Ragged Arse Rovers type thing initially and then developed from that.  They used to base themselves at the Boys Club.  Yeah, the Boxing Club was based in there, yeah.  Had a few good boxers come out of there.

So that was effectively the clubhouse for Ham FC?  Well, in those days, there wasn’t any… they played down the… King George’s?  Initially, they played at the back of there, the field nearer the river and there was no dressing rooms, so you changed in the Boys Club and then you had to walk all the way down there.  We had to carry the… well, I didn’t, I wasn’t old enough… they had to carry the posts and the crossbar all the way down there and put them up and what have you!  Bit different today – I don’t think you’d get the blokes doing it today.  The Football Club itself, for its standard, was very successful.   Chris was a good footballer… they won the County Cup four years in succession.
