Fierce headmistress at the Russell School – by VG

So back to the 1950’s, well Paul went to Petersham Russell in 1957 the other two went a year later because of when their birthdays came, they were 21 months younger and I had these other two who were four years younger so they went, they all went through those schools. Well it was a lovely little school but, all the mothers would say the same, the headmistress Miss Anderson was very fierce and very strict with the parents as well as with the children.  And then Mr Mc Call? at Orchard School which they went to when they were 8.  There was Petersham Russell at the end of Clifford Road and lying across the field at the back it was called the Orchard School and that has its entrance on Petersham Rd opposite the pub and .. the pathway that went from Clifford Rd, along the edges, it was before there was an Infants school that went up to the main road but that was all very good.

And how long was this very strict headmistress there for?  All the time my children were there and I’m not sure when she retired.  She’d been headmistress when it was at the bottom of the park, you see.  She’d come with the school here.
